C-SICK

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It’s no good, not for conservatism and not for the country.

I made the mistake of turning on C-Span yesterday knowing full well that the CPAC convention was being televised. My plan was to just briefly see what they were lying about saying about President Obama, and then moving on to some much needed and light-hearted entertainment. What I saw on the screen was my favorite comedian Republican Sarah Palin speaking to a sea of freshly scrubbed white faces. I squeezed the remote, swallowed hard, and stared ahead, physically unable to click the channel changer. What I then heard on C-SPAN from the CPAC convention’s last speaker made me C-SICK.

The talking points of Republican’s in their quest to regain the White House have been abundant during this latest silly season. Obama wants to fundamentally change America. Obama does not believe in American exceptionalism. Obama wants to lead “people of faith” to the “guillotine”  Yikes, that guillotine thing does sound pretty serious. Yes, this is the chewy, red meat the right has thrown to their CPAC compatriots and they gobble it up with zeal, shredding it with their long, sharp fangs and digesting chunks of it with self-righteous glee.

Ah, Sarah Palin. What more can be said about her that hasn’t already been said about nails across a blackboard? She is ear-splittingly abrasive, as nasty as a honey badger looking for dinner after a bad week, and if her nose grew like Pinnochio’s for every lie she told, she’d need a woodchipper to get through doors. But there she was, looking admittedly beauiful (on the outside of course, the inside is questionable) and larger than life on my big screen tv as she addressed the crowd…her crowd.

Once I turned on the CPAC convention and saw smug Sarah on the podium talking in that irritatingly shrill, sing-song way that the right falls for finds so endearing, I knew that if I left it on, a couple of things would happen. Of course, my blood pressure, normally perfect, would jump into the “quick-call the ambulance!” range. Then, if I waited too long to turn back to a DVR’d episode of “Portlandia” I was watching, I would enter the “HOW DOES THIS WOMAN GET AWAY WITH LYING EVERY TIME SHE OPENS HER MOUTH?” enraged zone. There are numerous and well-documented articles devoted to pointing out how much the woman spews complete and utter lies and gets away with it. She is pathological in her deceptions, and yet she is adored by millions on the right who view her as their fairy godmother, pure and ethereal, and the only one who can take them back to the America we all knew and loved in bygone days. The one where the “real Americans” ran the place, not the very obviously un-American Kenyan with his fake birth certificate, socialist ideology, and his apologizing for America crap. She happily blows away Bambi for the cameras and shoots unsuspecting cyotes from a plane dammit! Now THAT is freaking American!

Highlights of her delusions speech at CPAC included her usual snark and distortions about how President Obama caused a “sinking ship” of financial problems. Really Sarah? Really? That was Obama’s fault? Additionally, she ranted about how President Obama is anti-women, anti- God, anti-guns, and likes to “share secrets with the Kremlin”, of course without any of what you would call, facts to back up those pretty heavy accusations. Facts? Who the hell needs facts you liberal, elitist scum? If Sister Sarah says it, it’s good enough for us!

Additionally, Palin prattled on, President Obama, in her words, is unfit and unworthy to lead our troops. Actually, he has done quite a bit for veterans causes and has been promoting job opportunities for veterans and has tried to get as many out of harms way as possible and home with their families, but we won’t let these annoying facts get in the way of good ole’ tall tales spun by Mrs. Palin.

Her followers thrive on her vicious taunts to the left and at our President. Palin has brainwashed her followers to believe only in her myopic, 1950’s version of what America should be, and she will say anything to mock those who may think differently about issues in her America. She is the Queen of Mean. She is the Dear of Fear. She is the pot calling the kettle black, for it is actually she who is, and has been, trying to pit Americans against each other. If you are not on their/her side, you are not a real American with real American values. What’s scary is that there are too many people who buy into her special brand of fear and loathing. Her message of disdain for liberals and progressives is well documented and courses through her veins like a heat-seeking missile.

I find it fascinating that the right has accused the President of pitting Americans against Americans, but everytime Palin opens her mouth, she gushes over ‘real’ Americans (a.k.a. conservatives) lovingly and derides the ‘elites’ ( a.k.a. liberals) unabashedly. She thinks that the east coast/west coast liberals are ruining her America. College professors and their fancy book learnin’ are talked about with disdainful and dripping sarcasm by Ms. America Palin. Her contempt for the “lamestream media” is legendary. She has deservedly earned a reputation as a virulent, snotty, name-caller with a vindictive middle-school mentality who actually referenced President Obama’s race as “either half-white or half-black” in an interview with Sean Hannity once. I think that tells you all you need to know about this mean girl. So refresh my memory, just who is pitting who against each other again?

I leave you with insightful thoughts from an article written by Andrew Sullivan a little over a year ago, who captured the essence of Sarah Palin and her blatently disrespectful attitude towards the President. He comments in an article called, “Why Americans Won’t Buy Palinism”, much more effectively than I ever could, on her inability to engage in discourse which elevates instead of denigrates. Reflecting on a blog post from Palin which highlighted some Obama gaffes in order to fend off criticism of her latest one, Sullivan wote:

This may be a smart-ass retort; it may be useful inoculation against a potentially damaging gaffe; it may even be a well-researched blog-post, but what it isn’t is anything approaching the kind of character we expect in a president. A simple respect for the office she seeks would not reflect itself in these increasingly callow, sarcastic, cheap jibes at a sitting president. But sadly, like so many now purporting to represent conservatism, there is, behind the faux awe before the constitution, a contempt for the restraint and dignity a polity’s institutions require from its leaders.

There is no maturity here; no self-reflection; no capacity even to think how to appeal to the half of Americans who are already so appalled by her trashy behavior and cheap publicity stunts. There is a meanness, a disrespect, a vicious partisanship that, if allowed to gain more power, would split this country more deeply and more rancorously than at any time in recent years. And that’s saying something.

It’s obvious she hasn’t changed a bit since those words were penned. I knew I should have just changed the damn channel.
