Obama, the Rodney Dangerfield of Politics

Tea Party tax day protest 2010

I get no respect. The way my luck is running, if I was a politician I would be honest.
-Rodney Dadngerfield

Respect. Do you give respect? Do you get respect? Do you adhere to the notion that to get respect, you need to give it? Do you believe that respect is an old-fashioned idea in 2011? Do we as citizens deserve respect through the actions of our elected officials?

I don’t know where you stand on any of those questions. However, I surely know where Congressman Joe Walsh stands on the subject. Joe Walsh is the poster child for what is wrong with these Tea Party “Patriots”. Joe Walsh is disrespect personified. He believes he can use his elected position as his own personal bully pulpit to disrespect President Barack Obama. Walsh, the Illinois Republican Congressman has decided to stomp his feet and decree that he will not be attending a joint session of Congress where the President will outline (finally) an honest-to-goodness jobs plan for our tumbling economy. While I certainly understand everyone’s frustration with President Obama and the almost “too little too late” sentiment, a frustration I’ve had for the last year myself, I find it the height of chutzpah for Walsh to show not only Barack Obama the ultimate disrespect, but the office of  President of the United States, and by extension, every single citizen of this country that same disrespect. Walsh has caught the bug. President Barack Hussein Obama doesn’t deserve or get respect from the right and they seem really cool with that.

Walsh is tired of the President’s speeches. Boo-frikken-hoo. Get over it. I’m tired of Tea Partiers butchering history and the Constitution and the Founding Father’s legacy. Walsh thinks Obama is “abusing his power as president by calling a joint session of Congress for the address.” Did Walsh know who was president before Obama? Now there was a guy who abused power. Iraq anyone? Walsh thinks that this isn’t a “momentous” enough topic to be giving a speech about. That’s only for the fun stuff like war. Yeah Joe, this hideous recession, millions of people out of work, the greatest discrepancy between rich and poor ever in history, isn’t anything to get too worked up about. I gotcha.

But why am I surprised by his actions? First of all, he a proven dead-beat dad, which speaks an awful lot to his character. Second, he is Tea Partier, who I have come to see as a bit looney (see Bachmann),  selfish (see the quitter-queen Palin), and scary (see all ) gaggle of politicians. Or wait, is that a gaggle of geese and a pod of politicians? I always get that confused. And third, let’s face it, it’s the silly season (election time); it’s time for the full court press.

This guy has some serious cajones to exclaim that President Obama should “stop lying to the American people” on his fabulous Youtube harangue. Check out the indignant Congressman:

This from a guy who owed his wife about 117,000 dollars in back child support and interest. Poor Joe claimed he was “in between jobs” and didn’t have the money to take care of his kid. Hmmm, I wonder if he doesn’t just hate those enabling government programs where parents use food stamps, unemployment insurance, or reduced lunch programs to help take care of their kids when times are tough? Oops, he’s a Tea Party Patriot, of course he hates those government programs! This would seem to be what they call, ironic, since Congressman Joe couldn’t take care of his monetary responsibilites to his kids, his wife had to pick up the slack. His wife was like his own personal big government safety net program. That doesn’t show up in the official stats though. She did his job for him. Thanks Mrs. Walsh. If not for you, your ex- husband would have had to rely on government aid to get through the hard times…and that is clearly only for the dregs and teet-suckers of society…not upstanding white guys like Joe. No sir-ee.

But wait, there’s more. It seems that Joe’s claim of not having any money to pay his wife for the care of his child might have been…hold on to your unemployment checks… a lie! You know that word lie. Another impertinent Congressman named Joe Wilson shouted the words, “you lie!” during this president’s State of the Union Address in another shining example of the rampant disrespect directed at President Obama that seems to course freely through the veins of the right. Congressman Walsh somehow managed to make his own campaign a loan of 35,000 dollars at the same time he told his wife and kid he was so dang broke. Mr. Walsh must of been getting the hang of this lying thing pretty good because he somehow also managed to PAY HIMSELF BACK 14,200 DOLLARS while still claiming he was short on cash. He still hasn’t paid his wife back. Say it ain’t so Joe! You lie!

So here we have a man who is clearly a douchenozzle. Yes, a douchnozzle. I know it’s a little uncouth, but it’s my new favorite word used to describe a douche…with a bit more panache. Hey, if Palin can muck up the English language and get the word into the Oxford dictionary, then I can use a new term of derision, as crude as it may be. Walsh thinks he can just stick his middle finger up to the President of the United States? He was elected to serve all of the people of his district because of this wacky idea called representative democracy. He has the audacity to call the President of OUR United States “idiotic”, which he later backed off from, but really? I mean really? This is the level of respect he gets? Have we fallen so far into the abyss of insolence and boorish behavior that our political leaders feel no need to uphold some pretense of dignity and reverance for the office of President? It’s no wonder that teachers express angst over how some students talk to them. Men like Walsh and Wilson are some swell role models for our youth. There is an idiot in this scenario somewhere, but it isn’t Obama.

I have to wonder why he feels so emboldened? I have to wonder if it could maybe, possibly, have anything to do with his pigmentation? I’m just throwing that out there. Walsh actually said we elected President Obama out of “white guilt”, and certainly not because we thought he was a better option. I’m not deaf, dumb, and blind. I see, hear, and read things everyday that give me the notion that there are an awful lot of people who want to, all of a sudden, “take their country back”…maybe, possibly, they want their country back from the black guy. I stand in grocery lines and listen to what people say about this president. Some days I really wonder if I am living in 1952 or if the Civil War ever really ended. It is very sad and scary.

Even if there is not a bit of truth to that, I do find this particular crop of Tea Party/right wing conservative politicians succeed mightily  in skirting the limits of decorum and respect with regard to President Obama. From the moment he was elected, it was their own words that we should have heeded with dread. Mitch McConnell said publicly, with pride no less, these words:

MCCONNELL: We need to be honest with the public. This election is about them, not us. And we need to treat this election as the first step in retaking the government. We need to say to everyone on Election Day, “Those of you who helped make this a good day, you need to go out and help us finish the job.”

NATIONAL JOURNAL: What’s the job?

MCCONNELL: The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

Thanks so much Mitch! Thanks for doing your damndest to block anything and everything that the President and the democrats wanted to do to help get this country back on it’s feet after your party spent 8 years utterly destroying it. Thanks Teapublicans for filibustering more than any other congress in history in order to block any semblance of a legislative agenda or actually get any work done to get the country back on track http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/02/12/84487/senate-republicans-filibuster.html . Loads of wasted time and energy through your filibustering has brought us to where we are. I am personally offended as a citizen when Trent Lott says, “The strategy of being obstructionist can work or fail. So far it’s working for us.” Guess again Trent. It didn’t, hasn’t, and won’t work for US. You are supposed to be doing the right thing for US, not for your own selfish gain.  The right’s strategy to “keep the economy limping along” is apparant. Congratulations, you’ve succeeded.

Now we can see where your, “we need Obama to fail so we can get re-elected” got us. History will show very clearly that this crop of politicians has done as much as humanly possible to make sure this president does fail. If the debt-ceiling debacle didn’t prove that, nothing will. They couldn’t care less if you have a job as they actually blocked legislation to punish corporations for sending jobs overseas http://www.examiner.com/democrat-in-los-angeles/republicans-block-bill-to-prevent-jobs-from-moving-overseas?render=print . They don’t stay up at night wondering if you can send your kid to college as they cut Pell grants http://thinkprogress.org/education/2010/10/19/177486/gop-education-cuts/ . They barely winced when the Republican governors across the country cut hundreds of thousands of jobs adding to the already swelled unemployment numbers. This as there is actually a bit of private sector job growth that is nullified by your obvious glee in cutting public sector jobs to diffuse any gains. They continue the big lie when they say regulations hurt small businesses in order to promote their business-first agenda http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/09/02/310818/small-business-contradicts-gop-taxes-regulation/. They don’t care that this austerity non-sense was the absolutely wrong thing to do at the absolutely wrong time. Europe is realizing that now http://www.businessinsider.com/european-austerity-failure-2010-8 . But who pays the price? The “little people” do. Big business is actually doing just fine, thank you http://news.firedoglake.com/2010/07/05/corporations-sitting-on-1-84-trillion-cash/ .

The sheeple who hate that socialist…Muslim…you know, that DIFFERENT guy than us… in the Whitehouse will probably elect you sabatours on the right and once again, the bad guys win. Just like Wall Street. Just like you planned. Crime and disrespect evidently does pay. Just ask Joe Walsh. But remember, he won’t be representing all the people in his district on Capitol Hill this week when President Barack Hussein Obama outlines a jobs plan that could put thousands of people back to work. Walsh has already decided that anything this president says he will dismiss. God forbid he may hear something that he could find common ground on for the betterment of our country. He doesn’t think he has to. He’s got his own agenda, and it really doesn’t include any of us. What a deadbeat douchnozzle. Oh I’m sorry, was that disrespectful?
